About me

Hi there, my name is Joey and I'm a music educator and multi-instrumentalist (Sax, Clarinet, Flute & Piano). I began my training at the Junior Royal Northern College of Music under the guidance of renowned musicians Rob Buckland, Andy Scott, and Heather Gordon-Redfern. I then studied Music at the University of Cambridge (BA, MA), graduating with First Class Honours. Though classically trained on my main three instruments (sax, clarinet and piano), I've been performing in big bands since the age of 7 and have an equal love for both jazz and classical music.

I’m also the founder of "Your Music Theory Coach” (an online music theory education platform), and I love sharing my knowledge, making music more accessible, and helping students of all levels achieve their goals. Whether you're preparing for ABRSM exams, learning for fun, or looking for GCSE/A-Level support, I'm here to support your journey.

My Teaching Experience & Style

With nearly 10 years of experience teaching one-on-one and groups, I’ve worked with students aged 7 to 75, both in the UK and abroad. I specialise in ABRSM exams, theory, and university/audition prep, but also enjoy teaching students who want to learn for fun. I believe anyone can learn an instrument at any age, and many of my adult students progress quickly.

My teaching focuses on two key elements:

  1. Keeping lessons enjoyable by encouraging students to choose pieces they love, whether it’s Bach, Gershwin, or music from Animal Crossing.

  2. Setting goals—whether it’s a performance, an exam, or simply learning a favourite piece—to keep students motivated and progressing.

ABRSM Exams

I specialise in preparing students for ABRSM practical and performance grades and helping students achieve top marks. 100% of my students have passed their exams first time with over 60% achieving distinction. I can also offer advice for those close to their exam who need extra support. This might include:

- Providing feedback for performance video + areas to improve

- Recording accompaniment for instrumental exams

- Advice on how to reach distinction level

Fee: £30 per 30 minute lesson
