About
Phil began his musical journey at Bovington School in Dorset where he first learnt the Euphonium followed by the Trombone. Whilst there, he regularly attended Saturday morning rehearsals with the Junior Leaders Regimental Band.
After leaving Bovington School he moved to Poole Technical College to pursue an A Level in music. Here he received lessons on the Bass Trombone with Alwyn Green of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. He was also a regular player with the Purbeck Big Band, the Dorset Brass Quire and the Southern Youth Orchestra.
On leaving Poole Technical College he moved to the Royal College of Music in London, receiving lessons from Gerry McElhone of the Royal Opera Orchestra, Covent Garden. He began a long playing association with the London based All Souls Orchestra and regularly played with the New English Orchestra of Birmingham.
Once graduating in post-graduate studies at Middlesex University as a Brass Instrumental Teacher he has taught brass pupils (ranging in ages from aged 8 to 86) in Berkshire, Oxfordshire, London, Buckinghamshire and Guernsey, as well as conducting various orchestra and ensembles.
He is a member of the Independent Society of Musicians (ISM) the UK’s professional body for musicians.
Outside of music his interests are in linked to Contemporary Abstract Stone Sculpture, Gardening and watching cycle racing.
